The First Latter-day Saint Missionaries in Wales

The first official missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ called to serve in Wales was Henry Royle who was called at a conference in Manchester on 6 October 1840 to go to Cloy in Flintshire, possibly due to the fact that Elder Royle had relatives in the area.  His companion was Frederick Cooke, also of Manchester

By 16th October they were preaching in Flintshire where they met with immediate success. Elder Royle reported that by the 30th of October  a congregation had been established in Overton with 32 members.

In January 1849 a small Latter-day Saint chapel was built in Llanelli

becoming the first purpose built Latter-day Saint church not just in Wales

but in the whole of the British Isles.
